The megacity Rises to Dangerous Haze After Celebrations
Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" level.
Extremely High Pollution Measurements
Several parts of Delhi showed an AQI over 500, which translates to ten times the healthy level established by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than acceptable levels.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts
Since 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that blankets the city as the cold season approaches.
Yet in recent months, the recently formed local leadership appealed to the highest court to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and environment".
Judicial Ruling and Implementation
Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, judges agreed to the request, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during limited periods throughout the Diwali.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive violation of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi recorded contamination spiking around late evening to the most severe readings observed during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Implications
Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming worsening air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the celebrations.
Persistent Environmental Problem
Alarmingly severe concentrations of air contamination in the city have remained as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
Near the festival period, the levels of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been documented to spike to seventy percent above the most severe levels ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated metropolis.
Multiple Contamination Factors
The problem in the city is attributed to a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, construction debris, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in neighbouring states of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, farmers regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the city as cooler air arrives.
Public Health and Financial Impact
The economic and health consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants calling home the Delhi area is significant, according to multiple studies.
This pollution causes increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can even lead to cancer.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand early deaths annually in Delhi.
