A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
